The pandemic that is devastating our country has left hundreds of thousands out of work and unable to feed themselves or their families. Subaru wants to help. Through the Subaru Love Promise, a commitment to support our communities, Subaru and our retailers across the country made a donation to provide 50 million meals to Feeding America. This action, called Subaru Loves to Help, will make meals available at 199 local food banks across the country. In addition, Subaru retailers will be working to see how else they can help these local food banks, including food drives, donations and volunteer events. Subaru and our retailers want to help those affected and we know our ongoing support will be necessary as our local communities work to get back on their feet. Subaru Loves to Help, just one part of the Subaru Love Promise, it's one more reason why Subaru is more than a car company.

Loving the environment means more than loving the great outdoors. It means working to preserve it.

Since 2018, Subaru has partnered with TerraCycle.  Participating Subaru retailers collect hard-to-recycle trash that was headed to local landfills. We collect approximately 2 tons of this hard-to-recycle trash monthly, which will be converted to furnishings and other usable items and donated locally.

We should all have a chance to lead a healthy life. We’re aiming to give as many people that chance as we can.

Subaru Saved My Life!  –  Ashley H

Miss Ann stopped by our location back in the fall of 2019 , new to Subaru, she was very hesitant and unfamiliar with Subaru vehicles and overall what Subaru was as a car company. She was in the market for a vehicle to replace her aging current vehicle. Jay showed her each and every model that Subaru had to offer, also explaining the differences, benefits and features. After choosing and driving both a Forester and Outback... she eventually chose and liked the newly, redesigned 2020 Outback Touring XT. She said she will get back with Jay as she shopped other makes and models. Jay kept in contact with her, answering various questions; questions about reliability, about safety and about value. After about a month of shopping, she decided, that she will be treating herself to ordering a 2020 Outback Touring to her liking. Within 4-6 weeks, her new 2020 Abyss Blue Outback Touring XT arrived ! Overly excited and very anxious, she breezed through the paperwork process and patiently sat through the post delivery overview with our product specialist Ashley. While enjoying her Outback, to and from work ( she's a New Castle County 911 dispatch operator ) and other activities, she couldn't be even more excited about her limited time left with her career and soon to be retired ( she's coming up on 40 yrs with the state ) ! One day , while leaving a shopping center doing her errands and scheduled to be at work later that evening ( 911 is 24hrs a day ) , a suspected carjacker, carjacked a 5,000 lbs Jeep Grand Cherokee while the suspect was being chased by police, the suspect lost control of the Jeep and hit an embankment and launched the Jeep into the air proceeding to land upside down on top of Ann's Outback ..... absolutely devastating !! EMS did everything they could to keep her vitals stable as she was near death and unconscious !! She remained unconscious and in a coma for close to a month, barely hanging on her life. In her 40yrs as a dispatcher, Ann rarely ever missed work or called out, but when she did, she always gave notice. That night, no notice was given and her work eventually put 2 and 2 together about the crash / accident- her partner ,family, and friends all did their best to keep good spirits and prayers hoping Ann would pull through. After 2 months in Hospital, she was released with broken ribs, shoulder and other internal injuries; but, she survived !! Not only did she survive, she lost some memory due to head trauma, but she and EMS attributed her life being saved because she drove a Subaru !! 4 months after the crash / accident, she came back to Matt Slap Subaru, with her partner and ordered a new 2021 Subaru Ascent Limited !! They decided , life is too short and will live out retirement by going on more road trips and proceeded to purchase a camper and make use of the Ascents towing capabilities.

10 Years Together ~ GOTR Delaware and Matt Slap  –  Melissa B

This year we celebrate a TEN year love promise story and partnership between Girls on the Run Delaware and Matt Slap Subaru. Our long standing commitment to one another has certainly lasted the test of time! Girls on the Run Delaware has been honored and privileged to have been selected again this year as Matt Slap Subaru’s Hometown Charity for Subaru’s Share the Love program. Matt Slap Subaru has lived the Subaru love promise by creating positive change in the lives of the underserved girls and their families we serve in our community. We have been so impressed with the commitment Matt Slap Subaru has shown to our program, our girls and their families. Because of the generous funding we have received through Share the Love, we have been able to satisfy our strategic goals of reaching many of the underserved girls in our community who may not have otherwise been able to participate in our program. Because of the contributions we have received through Share the Love, we have been able to provide scholarships to hundreds of girls coming from families whose income is less than $20,000 per year. Matt Slap Subaru truly embodies Subaru’s mission of “sharing the love” by enhancing the emotional and physical health of our girls and their families. Together, we are creating a healthier Delaware -- girls, families and communities. Our partnership has certainly persevered through unforeseen times. During the COVID pandemic we relied heavily on our long time supporters such as Matt Slap. Social isolation and other stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic have proven to negatively impact children’s mental and physical health and behaviors. Our program’s intentional curriculum helps girls to navigate difficult emotions they may be experiencing coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic through providing them with a safe and supportive social network where they can express these feelings. Our program is more important now, than ever for adolescent and pre-adolescent girls across our state. Thanks to the commitment of Matt Slap, our program continues to grow and thrive and we are proud to say our fall 2021 season was our largest fall season to date! In the last ten years, Matt Slap has supported Girls on the Run Delaware with over $100,000 in contributions and we look forward to continuing our love promise story with Matt Slap in the years to come.

Subaru Saved My Life  –  Ashley H

A man in a truck was either stopped or going slow in the left lane on an interstate. No hazard lights no tail lights no one else stopped around him. I didn't see him and it became a head on collision. He proceeded to drive into and then over the Forester. I and my husband walked away with a few cuts from the shattered glass and a slight bump on the head. I will probably only drive a Subaru for the rest of my life. We purchased with confidence at Matt Slap Subaru a few months later. Thank you for building such a great car! -Kelsey R.

Girls on the Run-2021 Fall 5K  –  Ashley H

This year Girls on the Run had their largest fall season ever with over 900 girls statewide. They were able to offer 704 out of 907 girls with a partial or full scholarship, totalling over $75,000. They were also excited to broaden their reach by partnering with many of the Boys and Girls Clubs across the state. The Fall races were held Saturday, December 4th, 11:00am at the Del Tech campus in Georgetown and Sunday, December 5th, 2:00pm at the Old State Elementary campus in Odessa. Girls on the Run is an after-school program designed to inspire girls of all abilities to recognize and embrace their inner strength. Lessons emphasize the important connection between physical and emotional health. Through safety modifications and virtual programming, dedicated and trained staff are ready to adapt to local community needs. At the end of the program, girls complete a 5K, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment, setting a confident and goal-oriented mindset into motion. We here at Matt Slap Subaru promote Girls On The Run all year long and encourage donations through our Share The Love events.

Subaru Loves to Help Everyone Stay Warm!  –  Audrey B

In the U.S., many Americans are living on the edge, forced to choose between necessities such as purchasing food, paying rent, or going to the doctor. According to Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, approximately 43.1 million Americans live below the poverty level, and about 549,000 Americans are homeless on a typical night. Thanks to Subaru of America Inc.’s continued partnership with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in the Summer of 2021 over 40,000 blood cancer patients received love by receiving hand-written messages of hope, love, and care along with blankets from employees and customers, directly to cancer patients’ homes. For each blanket donation, a bonus blanket was given to be donated. These donations allowed Subaru to share even more love to those in our community with the gift of warmth! This holiday season, December of 2021, Matt Slap Subaru took those bonus blanket donations from our Leukemia & Lymphoma drive and helped those in need of warmth. Hundreds blankets were donated to and split between the House of Joseph Shelter and to the Women & Children’s Shelter at Sacred Heart House in Wilmington, DE to share just a little extra added warmth, love and comfort to those who need it the most.

Honeybun a tri-pod sweetie!  –  Keith H

The Delaware Humane Association is a "no-kill" shelter and we receive transports weekly from out-of-state shelters that do not have the same no-kill philosophy as Delaware. When we received Honeybun via rescue transport in late September, she was immediately a staff favorite, being an amputee made her stand out but her personality was what really made her so dang lovable. She is so happy! Had our partner rescue not stepped in to rescue her, she would certainly not be alive today...especially being an amputee. Tom F. one of our volunteers recently lost his dog and was looking to replace the emptiness in his life. While volunteering at the adoption center, Tom met Honeybun and it was love at first sight! Here are his own words: "What can I say? In the two short weeks since I rescued her we have already made an unbreakable bond. She sleeps in my bed, loves going for car rides, I take her to all the local disc golf courses and she has done an amazing job learning how to stay with me and enjoy the 3-4 mile walk. We have visited all of my relatives, hit up Home Depot and Lowe’s, went to a car show in Downingtown, and spent 3/4 hrs meeting all the people. Everyone tells me she is the sweetest most prettiest dog they’ve ever met. She loves kids and all my neighbors and their dogs. This little baby is always so happy. I am truly blessed to have such a sweet dog in my life and I have to wonder, who rescued who?" Thank Matt Slap Subaru for choosing the Delaware Humane Association to partner with annually for Subaru Loves Pets promotion; it is because of Matt Slap and Subaru America that we can continue to receive transports from out of state and allow the Delaware Humane Association to continue "Making friends for life".

Thanksgiving 2021 - Kingswood Methodist Church  –  Ashley H

Matt Slap Subaru and The Kingswood United Methodist Church all went the extra mile to provide a perfect Thanksgiving dinner for 12 families this year! With the help from the Commission Committee volunteers Alice Stiner and her husband from Kingswood United Methodist Church, Matt Slap Subaru provided 12 Thanksgiving meals to 12 families in need; ranging from a family of 3 to a family of 13. Every family was provided with a full size turkey, stuffing, potatoes, mac & cheese, two kinds of veggies, gravy, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls and an extra large dessert pie. All meals were individually packaged and Alice Stiner of Kingswood United Methodist Church took it upon herself to pick up and deliver every meal individually to each family. Thank you Alice Stiner for helping us to make this upcoming Thanksgiving Day a great one!

Jeanne's Matt Slap Subaru Love Promise Experience  –  Jeanne G

Recently after reading consumer reports, my husband wanted to get rid of our 20-year-old car with 215,000 miles and purchase a Subaru Forester for comfort and safety. We contacted every Subaru dealer. Either they had no Foresters, or they added a few thousand dollars to the price, knowing Foresters were hard to get. Our son who lives in Delaware visited Matt Slap and was impressed with how friendly the staff was. We contacted Matt Slap and had the most understanding, sweet salesman named Nic, who was very patient, spending a lot of time with us on the phone in the office. He made buying a pleasure. Audrey, Product Specialist, quietly and helpfully told us about some of Forester’s features. We returned a few weeks later and Audrey told us even more about our new car, reassuring us that we could call her anytime we were confused and needed help, or just wanted to learn more about the car. Her compassion about our needs was sincere. These two young people treated us with dignity and respect. We were fortunate to go out of state for our car because the purchase was easy and pleasant

National Make A Dogs Day- Delaware Humane Society  –  Ashley H

National Make A Dog’s Day on October 22nd provides an opportunity to give all dogs the best day of their lives. The day not only encourages visits to shelters, but it is also a reminder to animal lovers everywhere to adopt instead of shop for a new pet. Approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters in the United States annually, many being relinquished by their owners. Approximately 35% of the animals that enter shelters are euthanized. Awhile numbers continue to decline, the need for adoption continues to be overwhelming. One sure way to make a dog’s day is giving them a new, loving home through adoption. With a love of pets and caring for animals everywhere, making it a vital pillar of the Subaru Love Promise, the automaker has continually given back to the canine friends that deserve it most. Matt Slap Subaru has partnered with Delaware Humane Society once again this year (2021) to be apart of the adoption events for October and "Make a Dogs Day", which our focus is pinpointed towards the Underdogs; who are the hard-to-adopt shelter pets in need of loving homes, including dogs with special needs, who are affectionately dubbed “Underdogs.” Matt Slap Subaru donated 100 dog toys and $100 per pet (dogs and cats) adopted during the month of October. Matt Slap Subaru will continue our long-standing commitment to help shelter dogs of all kinds in the coming years. This is our Love Promise!

Girls On The Run 5K - 2021  –  Ashley H

Girls on the Run is an after-school program designed to inspire girls of all abilities to recognize and embrace their inner strength. Lessons emphasize the important connection between physical and emotional health. Through safety modifications and virtual programming, dedicated and trained staff are ready to adapt to local community needs. At the end of the program, girls complete a 5K, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment, setting a confident and goal-oriented mindset into motion. Love Promise - Chris Burkhard  –  Ashley H

Over the years, Chris Burkhard has had many other cars: Land Rovers, Blazers, Nissans and Forerunners. However, when he wanted a safe, solid everyday driver as a business vehicle he chose an Outback from Matt Slap Subaru. One year he surprised his daughter with her first car for Christmas, with a CrossTrek. When his son, who is the only true car aficionado, he bought a WRX and then he upgraded to a WRX STI. All of this stems from a relationship with a young salesperson, Chris Montelongo. Chris was different from your car salesperson stereotype. Young and hungry but direct, a straight shooter, someone who not afraid to help him solve a problem. Matt Slap even helped Chris buy a forerunner for his business "Placers". Speaking of Placers, they have helped people find jobs and companies manage a temporary workforce. They are committed to helping the community we all serve and have a race each year, "Placers Crush Your Run", that has hundreds of racers in a 5k, and kids who benefit from adaptive bikes get ones to own. Matt Slapt was kind enough to make a meaningful dollar donation to their cause. Chris Montelongo has become a friend and an expert he can count on. Between employees, friends, mother in laws, it has to be at least 10 cars sold over the last few years. His mother in law bought a Forester last week from Matt Slap because he trusts Mr. Montelongo and your dealership. -AH

Matt Slap Subaru Shares the Love with GOTR!  –  Tim H

Matt Slap Subaru is proud of our long-standing partnership with Girls on the Run Delaware as our Hometown Charity. Girls on the Run’s mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. By participating in this activity-based program, having the opportunity to engage with strong mentors, and being physically active, young girls develop self-esteem, courage, and healthy living skills as they proceed into their teens. Approximately 35% of Girls on the Run participants are from lower income families who cannot afford to pay the program fee. Matt Slap Subaru is delighted to contribute to the Girls on the Run Scholarship Fund so that these girls will have the opportunity to participate in this transformational program. Because of COVID-19, Matt Slap Subaru’s donation is especially important as Girls on the Run adapts their curriculum to a fluid model. This has enabled them to deliver their program virtually, in-person, or a combination of the two, as needed. Matt Slap Subaru is pleased to support the girls at a time when they need the emotional support and physical activity more than ever. Kim Chitty, Girls on the Run’s Executive Director says, “Matt Slap Subaru’s generosity will make an immediate difference in the lives of the girls in our program. Their contribution supports our expansion to bring our Girls on the Run program to every girl who wants to participate. We could not be where we are today without their generous support. As one of our girls said, 'without the support from Matt Slap Subaru, I would not be a Girl on the Run. I love Girls on the Run! Matt Slap Subaru, thank you for all you do!' " We look forward to participating in Girls on the Run’s upcoming Virtual 5k Run by video to cheer the girls on and congratulate them on a great fall season!

Thanksgiving Blessing at Matt Slap Subaru  –  Debbie D

In a time when it seems all hope and good has escaped us, a time when fires are burning, the human race is being divided, just then something special HAPPENS! It is then someone appears in your life allowing you to make a difference. The Thanksgiving Holiday will never mean the same to Matt Slap Subaru. With the help of a dear soul we were given the names of 24 families in our community that needed a little special attention. We started by calling each family taking the time to talk, listen and learn. A small amount of time that truly meant the world to them and US! It would have been easy to just go and buy what was easiest for us, getting to know each family and asking what was special to their family on this Thanksgiving Day made it special for them. Then came the shopping, 24 turkeys, stuffing, canned goods, fresh produce, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce and of course fresh pies were purchased for each family. Not the same menu for each. But, as we spoke, I took notes, as to what was special to them and "their" family. Did it take a little longer to customize their menu? Yes! Was it worth every minute? ABSOLUTELY! The team at Matt Slap became our own "FAMILY" taking the time to box each meal together, understanding, just how truly blessed we are to be able to help in some small way. To make one day of the year just a little less stressful, even if only for a moment! Now the fun part, meeting the families! Over 2 days families were coming in to our dealership to pick up their goodies. As you know, working in a dealership you never know who will be available at any given time. With that said, in 2 days each of us were given the opportunity to meet, talk and assist the families in taking the meals to their cars. For those not as fortunate, on Wednesday, we delivered 6 meals to their homes. There was sadness that turned to smiles, tears that turned to laughter, not to mention many, many HUGS! Was this a perfect opportunity for a photo op? Sure was, but, taking the time to honor each family, making them feel special meant so much more. It’s within those special moments that we learn the most. Take the time, Give Back! From our Family to YOURS, Happy Holidays!

Matt Slap Subaru Loves Pets  –  Debbie D

During the month of October, we were accepting donations in our showroom to help The Delaware Humane Society. On Thursday, November 8th, we will be taking everything donated to help as well as gift families adopting a stray. Each year, hundreds of animals come to DHA in search of a warm bed, a good meal, and most importantly, a new home. DHA serves the community by offering affordable spay/neuter services, low-cost vaccination clinics, and a pet food pantry. For more information, you can visit their website:

Matt Slap Subaru Loves Learning  –  Debbie D

In August 2018, Matt Slap Subaru worked on Subaru Loves Learning. For this month we focused on providing books and school supplies to Etta J. Wilson Elementary School. The dealership had a record month with almost 200 new and used cars being sold. For every car sold the buyer wrote a letter to a child that was then attached to the inside jacket of the book. In addition to the books, the dealership was lucky enough to have our clients also donate many school supplies that I delivered on September 21st.

Matt Slap Subaru - Subaru Loves to Care Event  –  Debbie D

Matt Slap Subaru is a third-year participant in the Subaru Loves to Care initiative with LLS. In July 2018, Matt Slap Subaru donated blankets and craft boxes to St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. For every new car that was sold we had the new owner write a card of encouragement. We were able to deliver over 125 blankets and dozens of craft boxes to the hospital to the oncology department. The delivery was Friday, August 17th.

Matt Slap Subaru Partners with LLS  –  Julia S

Matt Slap Subaru is a second-year participant in the Subaru Loves to Care initiative with LLS, and forged a new partnership with St. Francis Hospital this year. Eve Slap and Sean Larry of Matt Slap Subaru, nursing and administrative staff from the hospital, and long-time LLS volunteer and five-time blood cancer survivor Diane Paradise, were present for the delivery of 80 blankets, 10 craft kits, and about 20 care cards for cancer patients at St. Francis on Tuesday, July 18th. Eve Slap noted that programs like these, along with all of the research that LLS supports, are crucial in working to find a cure for blood cancers. We are thrilled to continue working with Matt Slap Subaru through this program, and were happy to have St. Francis come on board as the recipient of these patient care items!

Sponsoring Girls On The Run Delaware  –  Maria O

Matt Slap Subaru was a sponsor for the season-ending 5k Girls on the Run event, which took place at the Wilmington Riverfront on Saturday, May 20th, 2017. Girls on the Run is a program for girls in 3rd-5th grade that encourages girls to recognize their individual strengths and celebrate connections with others. Each season, girls gain a better understanding of who they are and what's important to them, the value of teamwork and healthy relationships and how they can have a positive impact on the world. Girls also make a meaningful contribution to their community through a team-organized Community Impact Project. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation for fitness and healthy habits and teach life skills including treating others with care, practicing gratitude and managing emotions.

Subaru and NWF Loves the Earth  –  Donna R

"Kids are funny. Give them gloves and a hand trowel, and they start digging for insects as if they are lost treasure. You could never tell if the small statured girl or the large boy with a deep voice would squeal when they found a bug. They knew about worms, but did not know that ladybugs could come in different colors. Grubs were new to them as were ""fire ants."" Rollie-pollies could entertain them for well, only a few minutes until the next new and exciting creature emerged. Who knew a few square feet of dirt could be so entertaining? Two different classes worked on our school garden. The first class pulled weeds and prepared the soil. The second class planted the flowers and watered them. It took about 2 hours and 50 popsicles. It seemed that we worked on our garden on the hottest, muggiest day. As soon as our plants were in the ground, we had two weeks of cold weather and rain. The plants are growing, and we are enjoying watching them grow. "Thank you from Wilson Elem!

We Go The Extra Mile For Girls on The Run  –  Jane C

To all of our friends at Matt Slap Subaru! “Thank you” never seems to cover how appreciative we all are of your continued generosity and for “sharing the love” with Girls on the Run Delaware. We were incredibly grateful and totally amazed to receive the $13,843.95 that was raised during the 2015 Subaru Share the Love event! One of the most unique aspects of Girls on the Run is our scholarship program, which allows girls of any income level to participate. Through scholarships, we can empower more girls with the tools needed to make the right choices about fitness and diet while building self-esteem to prevent the display of at-risk activities in the future. Since our inception over 10 years ago, in any given year, over 60% of our girls are either on full or partial scholarship to participate in our program. Matt Slap Subaru has been a HUGE factor in helping us continue our success in never having to turn a girl away due to her family’s inability to pay the program fee. This year alone, Matt Slap has “shared the love” by providing funding for 6 full teams of 15 girls each — that’s 90 girls! — so that they could have the opportunity to participate in our program and experience the joys of our curriculum. In addition, the dollars raised provided proper running shoes for those participating girls who could not afford them. Talk about going the extra mile! We are so thankful for our continued outstanding partnership with Matt Slap Subaru.

Karen had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Robinson's third grade science class and got to tell them about the program and show them the books. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Gilmore, Director of Academics and Curriculum for helping us coordinate the event and to Jane Castle and Kim Chitty from Girls on the Run of Delaware for helping to pair us up with the school!

During the Subaru Share the Love Event we held a "Fill a Subaru with Love Pet Supply Drive" to benefit the animals that are currently residing at Faithful Friends Animal Society. We chose this organization since they are a no-kill shelter that provides great care to animals throughout the state of delaware. Since they are not state funded and rely solely on donations in order to keep the shelter running on a daily basis, we made it our mission to collect as many items as possible during the six week collection period. At the end of our drive we collected 312 items for the shelter due to the generosity of our customers and employees!

Subaru Sends TJ To The Philadelphia Auto Show  –  Tami O

Recently Matt Slap Subaru put a pair of tickets for the Philadelphia Auto Show up for a giveaway on our Facebook page and saw that Tami, a mother from the Cherry Hill, NJ area had entered our contest and let us know that her 5 year old son TJ loves cars and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic muscle wasting disease with no known survivors. After learning about TJ's love for cars we knew we wanted to help get him to the auto show and give him a great experience. After reaching out to Tami to let her know that they would be receiving tickets we reached out to Subaru of America to see how we could help TJ meet one of our Subaru Rally Drivers. With the help of the team at Subaru of America, TJ and his family met Subaru Rally Driver Sverre Isachsen and he received a remote control Subaru Rally Car and Subaru gear. Through our partnership with Subaru of America we were proud to help get TJ to the auto show and spend a day with what he loves!
